Heart-warming story
This is a very charming, heart-warming book about love, forgiveness and individuality. It’s filled with fairy tales told by a loving grandmother to her granddaughter. The 7-year-old granddaughter, Elsa, is such a little smarty-pants but with a vulnerable side to her that is very endearing. Her family and neighbors are as unique as she is with their own stories to tell. I particularly enjoyed reading Elsa’s thoughts about Halfie, the half-brother/sister her mother is expecting. And her love for the wurse, a giant dog-like creature, surely touched my heart.
The reason I can only give the book 3 stars is that most of the time I felt as though I was reading a book written for children. The fairy tales the grandmother tells the little girl reminded me of “The Chronicles of Narnia”. There’s even a “magic” cupboard (or at least it’s magic in a sense). While I loved reading “The Chronicles of Narnia” to my daughter when she was little, it’s not something that I would choose to read now as an adult. I also found the book to be a bit too predictable for my liking. I started losing interest about half way into the book so unfortunately, though I do see quite a bit of merit to the book, I can only give it 3 stars, which of course means that I liked it, just didn’t love it to pieces.
